The Battle Of Shalateng

23/02/202524/05/2025 Radio Chinar 90.4FMHistory

A Crucial Turning Point In The Indo-Pak War

On November 7, 1947, the Battle of Shalateng took place in Kashmir, marking a critical juncture in the first Indo-Pakistani war. This intense conflict was instrumental in thwarting Pakistani forces’ attempts to seize Srinagar and significantly influenced the war’s trajectory.

Context of the Battle

The roots of the battle can be traced to the events following India’s independence on August 15, 1947, which ignited disputes regarding the status of Jammu and Kashmir. In response to an invasion by armed tribesmen from Pakistan on October 22, Maharaja Hari Singh sought aid and signed the ‘instrument of accession’ to India on October 26. Soon after, troops from the Indian Army’s 1 Sikh Regiment were deployed to Budgam airfield in Srinagar.

The Battle Commences

1.         Approximately two weeks after the Indian Army’s arrival, the Battle of Shalateng began. On November 7, aerial reconnaissance detected a large contingent of tribesmen preparing to assault Srinagar. In reaction, Brigadier L. P. Sen and General Kulwant Singh devised a counter-strategy.

2.         That day, a coordinated operation was initiated, involving the 1 Sikh Regiment, 1 Kumaon, and 4 Kumaon, with support from a squadron of the 7 Light Cavalry and air strikes from the Royal Indian Air Force. This meticulously organized attack resulted in a decisive Indian victory, inflicting heavy losses on enemy forces and forcing the remaining Pakistani troops to retreat toward Baramulla.

Consequences and Remembrance

1.         The success at Shalateng not only protected Srinagar but also shifted the war’s momentum, allowing Indian forces to drive back the invaders across Jammu and Kashmir until a ceasefire was reached on January 5, 1949. The bravery exhibited during this battle is commemorated as a significant chapter in the region’s history. To honour the valour demonstrated in this pivotal conflict, ceremonies and remembrances continue to take place.

2.         In recognition of their bravery and sacrifices, the ex-servicemen (ESM) were honoured in a special ceremony. This event celebrated their contributions not only during the battle but also throughout their military careers, highlighting the pivotal role they played in safeguarding the region. The gathering served as a poignant reminder of the courage and dedication of these veterans, who received accolades from military officials and community leaders. Their stories of valor and resilience were shared, fostering a sense of pride and gratitude among attendees, and reinforcing the importance of remembering those who served in the defence of the nation. Such acknowledgments not only honour their past efforts but also inspire future generations to appreciate the sacrifices made for the country’s security.
